"History of Arbutus Cottage (Gap of Dunloe)
19th-Century Furniture Hub: Built in the 1880s, the cottage originally served as the workshop for master cabinet maker James French. French specialized in "Killarney work"—intricate woodwork and furniture carved and inlaid with native arbutus and bog oak timber found in the Killarney National Park.
Royal Seal of Approval: The cottage's workshop was so renowned that in April 1885, the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) visited the property to view the famous inlaying and carving industry firsthand."

"Such heat I have never before experienced," he said, adding merrily, " except in a Turkish bath. The other members of the company, with the exception of our accompanist, are all Australians, and consequently do not feel it. As for myself, the present weather is almost unbearable ; with the wind like a puff from a furnace, and the dust it means the ruination of a man's voice."
