1,55pm Carol - you missed the clocks in this one, have you still got sand in your ears from your holliers? Just looking at the oil lamp as a standby, you couldn't trust the electricity in those days, the ESB were forever going on strike!

The seems a bit strange, because Punchbowl road doesn't connect to the Hume highway, at either end.

Mich This is actually Coronation Parade, Enfield. It may have been called Punchbowl Rd at some time, however is different to the present Punchbowl Road, which connects with Coronation Parade, about 1km further south.

Absolutely right, the building with the little dome is still there. Or at least, it was when the Google Streetview car drove past.

Coronation Parade was originally called The Boulevard and Punchbowl Road respectively, the two ran parallel to each other, separated by the tram-line, tracks are visible in this photo. The tram-line ran from Enfield through to Burwood Road, Burwood, and through suburbs of Concord, Cabarita and Mortlake. Coronation parade was was so named for the coronation of King George VI in 1937, and with the closure of the tram-line the adjoining Coronation reserve as seen on the left of the tracks was widened when the line was closed. Looks like it was taken from Enfield North signal box which was demolished in the 1990s when the yard was remodelled.

It was awful what they did to that vista.
