The photo is taken in New York's Columbus Circle. That's the monumental statue of Columbus in its center in the background. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Circle

Interestingly, Cantor is standing on the top hatch and turret of an M1917 Light Tank, the American license-built version of the French Renault FT-17 Tank (the M1917 is distinguished from the FT-17 by the lifting hook on the hull, noted on the photo above). Presumably the tank was in Columbus Circle for a postwar display. Here's a photo of an M1917 Light Tank posted at the Boston Public Library's Flickr collection for comparison: www.flickr.com/photos/boston_public_library/8780208403/

It's possible this photo is of an event connected to the actors' strike of 1919, in which Cantor played a part. www.americantheatre.org/2013/03/01/when-actors-equity-sta...

The 36th in 1917 was composed of both the Texas and Oklahoma National Guard. That's why the divisional patch is composed of an arrowhead (Oklahoma) and the letter T (Texas).

The Sailor in the photograph is armed with an M1917 rifle. M1917 rifles were produced by Eddystone, Remington, and Winchester to supplement the M1903 rifles which were in short supply when the United States entered into World War II.
