Several flags at half mast...lots of possible occasions... Date range 1887-1890: Empire Hotel, SW cnr Pitt/Hunter Sts (seen here in the mid distance on the rhs), built/opened 1887... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/115449519 - Freeman's Journal, 19th November, 1887...'A New Sydney Hotel'... Exchange Hotel, SW cnr Pitt/Bridge Sts...the incarnation of the Exchange Hotel that we see in this pic was condemned in January 1890...it was subsequently demolished and replaced by a new hotel with an ornamental tower and cupola...I haven't managed to establish dates for the demolition and construction of the new hotel...just going on a Licensing Court application, the new hotel appears to have been built (and running) by ca. August 1890... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/28276827 - SMH, 22nd January, 1890...City Improvement Board order re the demolition of the Exchange Hotel...the date for demolition ordered here was later extended... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/235773444 - the Daily Telegraph, 21st June, 1890...brief mention here of the new Exchange Hotel (architect N.C. Day) which appears to have then been under construction (see item mid first highlighted column)... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/113339543 - the Evening News, 15th August, 1890...'Licensing Court'...'a temporary license was granted to Ann Nightingale, for the Exchange Hotel, Bridge and Pitt Streets.' * take care not to mix up the Exchange Hotel, SW cnr Pitt/Bridge Sts and Aaron's Exchange Hotel, which adjoined the Royal Exchange (it was within/part of the Exchange Buildings)...Aaron's Exchange Hotel fronted both Pitt and Gresham Sts...both hotels appear in this pic... trove.nla.gov.au/work/170940115 - the NLA has a print of this pic...
