Based on the news displayed in the window, this photo was taken on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1940. One of the earthquake news summaries says, "8:45 this morning. More pronounced than the one last Friday morning"; there were 2 earthquakes of note in New England in December 1940, one on the 20th and one on the 24th. 12/20/1940 was a Friday, and with the bit of Santa news also posted, it's definitely the 24th for this photo.

William Joseph Hill, one of the best known pop songwriters of that time lost his battle with alcohol abuse and died of heart failure. On Sept 24th, 1940, he performed at the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco. Also performing at that show; Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, and Johnny Mercer. Three months later, on Christmas Eve, he died of heart failure in a Boston hotel room. He was only 42.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Italian wall slogans etc. from the Fascist Era for non-Fascists, and we'd love to have this added to the group! See the official plaque offered to Neville Chamberlain and Lord Edward Halifax by the Gruppo Montecatini on 13 January 1939: AVTARCHIA [http://www.flickr.com/photos/smailtronic/2361897515/]
