Any idea of the actual date taken? Listed date is January 01, 1900 which can’t be right!

erik jagger upper left corner, looks like a date, with 24 written. maybe 1924 ? it's just a speculation

The date written on the negative is 8/22/24. This could mean that it was taken in 1924, but one practice of the Bain studio was to apply a date when they used the photo later, often because the individual or event was in the news again. LoC does not apply exact dates without confirming evidence and described this photo as "circa 1900." Looking at the photos in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benito_Mussolini I personally think circa 1920 might be closer. In the Perth Amboy Evening News. April 03, 1924, FINAL EDITION, Page 3, bottom of column 4 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85035720/1924-04-03/ed-... is a photo that looks to be of him with a similar build.

www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/italian-dictator-be... has a copy of this photo and dates it as September 1923. It also reckons the location is Biarritz.

Thanks swanq for looking into this photo and explaining to everyone how Bain's dating of photos worked. From my experience, it seems that Bain rarely sent their photographers outside New York City or the surrounding area. If you see a Bain photo taken in Europe then you can be fairly certain they made a copy of another photo, and the date is probably when the copy was made. I think we'll hold off on adding the date from the Getty Images copy since it also comes from a press agency (in that case, a British one) and I'm not sure if their dating is any more accurate than Bain's.
