"BOXER BECAME BALLET STAR The fairly general Australian view that male ballet dancers are "cissies" is condemned by Valentin Zeglovsky in his highly entertaining autobiogrgphy, "Ballet Crusade." Zeglovsky, who came to Australia with the Colonel de Basil company and decided to stay, was a timber cutter and cowhand in Latvia. He almost became a prizefighter before he joined the Riga State Opera ballet and began world travels as a dancer. His story, translated from the Russian, is quickly-told in the clipped style of modern journalism, with plenty of humour and drama. The chapters on his childhood in Russia before and during the Revolution make an incredible picture. Of particular appeal to the balletomane (and printed on pastel-coloured paper: pink, fawn, blue and green), the book has numerous photographs and ends with a critical appraisal of ballet in Australia.
