In fifth grade, I remember watching Clinton's first inauguration speech in my history class. My teacher, Mr. Fry, said, "Look at his hair. It will be white in two years."

Mrs Palmer, her five daughters, and the rest of the community were shocked by the suggestion that they take a bus instead.

"The photo has no identification, but it seems likely that the event depicted is a meeting of Palmer's Community Hiking Association, run by the Sydney department store F.J. Palmer & Sons. A sign to the left of the stage has the words of a song "Palmer's Official Hiking Song - Hike Yourself into Jolly Good Health..." and a crest above bears the initials 'FJP'. A crest to the right of the stage bears the initials 'RRCo'. "F.J. Palmer and Sons Ltd, whose store was situated at the corner of Pitt and Park Streets, were tailors, men's and boys' outfitters, and suppliers of sporting and travel requisites. In 1932 the store sponsored five very popular "mystery hikes" around Sydney offered by the railways." –Object Description

F J Palmer's had numerous stores around Sydney at least, including Bankstown in which I used to shop, and were taken over by Buckingham's who in turn were taken over by by City and Suburban Properties, then by City Resources, which folded in 1991 when delisted for failing to pay their annual company listing fee. Palmer's also published a special children's annual which was sold in their stores in the 1950s.

Clothing style, especially women's hats puts this photograph in the late 1920s, possibly early 1930s time-frame.

Robley Dunglison Evans (1846-1912), Civil War veteran, commanded a battleship during the Spanish-American War, commanded the Atlantic Fleet from 1905, called "Fighting Bob." There have been two US Navy destroyers named for Evans: www.history.navy.mil/photos/pers-us/uspers-e/rd-evans.htm

The Japanese Admiral at right is not "Yamamota", but rather "Yamamoto". He is not to be confused with Admiral Isoroku Yamamato, famous of WW Two exploits. He is Yamamoto Gonnohyōe, or Admiral Count Yamamoto Gonbee. From wikipedia: "Yamamoto's subsequent rise through the ranks was rapid: rear admiral (1895); vice admiral and Navy Minister (1898). He was raised to the rank of danshaku (baron) under the kazoku peerage system in 1902; and he was promoted to the rank of admiral in 1904. As Minister of the Navy during the Russo-Japanese War, Yamamoto showed strong leadership and was responsible for appointing Tōgō Heihachirō as commander-in-chief of the Combined Fleet. He gave voice to Tōgō's reports when he read his aloud his reports from the war to the assembled Diet.[2] Yamamoto was elevated to hakushaku (count) in 1907. Count Yamamoto served as Prime Minister in 1913-14." (ref. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamamoto_Gonnohy%c5%8de ) This photograph was almost certainly taken on July 10 or on July 11, 1907. The two admirals met on both those days inthe midst of Admiral Baron Yamamoto's July 1907 trip to the USA. The met at the New York Navy Yard, and at a luncheon at the hotel Astor on July 11. Thanks for the information (and correct spelling of Yamamoto's name!) It's helpful to know what likely made the photo newsworthy for the Bain News Service. Another photo held by the Library of Congress, hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cph.3c03788 copyrighted by Bain in 1907 is inscribed 7/10/07 so your suspicions about the occasion are correct. (That photo was incorrectly attributed as Isoroku Yamamoto but the record has been corrected and will soon appear in the public catalog correctly.) The date in reverse on the upper edge of the negative, 8/24/13, may indicate that the photo was used when Yamamoto Gonnohyōe became prime minister. We'll adjust the description when we update the record
