Second from the left is Patrick MacDonald, aka "Macbeth the Great"; hear him singing "Buy me a Zeppelin" here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3g8O4qNdJ0 Middle guy looks like Cecil Anderson (1906-1968), aka "the Duke of Iron." He was Trinidad-born, moved to NYC in 1923, and was appearing regularly at the Village Vanguard and the Caribbean Club in the 1940s. See more photos of Anderson here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlGPDoPCHUE Next is Wilmoth Houdini (1895-1973); hear him sing "Black but Sweet" here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QkqbKD1Lxo Far right is "Lord Invader" (1915-1961), born Rupert Westmore Grant; hear him singing his best known composition, "Rum and Coca-Cola," here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMWUF3LYd88 Looks like this could be the event recorded by Alan Lomax in 1946, featuring all these men.

I suspect that the man at left is George Anderson (Cecil Anderson’s brother), who performed–briefly?–under the sobriquet “Count of Monte Cristo.” My guess is that these photos were taken not at the “Calypso at Midnight” concert at Town Hall in 1946, but rather at a calypso monarch competition that was staged at the Renaissance Ballroom in February 1947. The competitors were Houdini, Duke of Iron, MacBeth, and Count of Monte Cristo. news.google.com/newspapers/p/afroid=jR0mAAAAIBAJ&sjid...

Wow, he does look like he must be kin to Cecil Anderson--close resemblance here. humred2007, it sounds like you've got the final id for this photo, AND the occasion too. Love when the details are all gathered up! Thanks!

Just serendipity. I muffed the date, though--it was Sunday, July 13, 1947, not February. I also see that the link I left earlier doesn't work; it's supposed to go a story on p. of the July 12, 1947 edition of the Afro-American, which is archived at Google News. Here's a link to the portal: www.afro.com/afroblackhistoryarchives/
