Patterson's American education, Volume 59, which looks to have been published in 1962 indicates that the Metropolitan Vocational High School was at 78 Catharine [sic] St, New York, NY. Catherine St. is on the Lower East Side, not far from the Brooklyn Bridge.

    NYT of March 23, 1969 select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F20D11FA3A5D137A... {needs subscription} reported that the Board of Education was closing the "32-year-old Metropolitan Vocational High School on the Lower East Side." The address was given as 78 Catherine Street. By that time, the music program shown in these pictures had moved to the High School for the Performing Arts which was apparently a branch of Metropolitan Vocational High, according to NYT of May 29, 1955 select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=FB0916FB345A1B7B... NYT of April 12, 1949 indicates the same relationship and gives the address of the School of Performing Arts as 120 West 46th Street.

    The article Gottlieb did for Down Beat [ hdl.loc.gov/loc.music/wgpubs.093 ] described the school as "a beat up school in Lower Manhattan, just off the fringes of Chinatown." That argues for these pictures being taken at the 78 Catherine St. location.
