The former Laura McDonald Stallo (1890-1972), daughter of lawyer Edmund Stallo and Laura Beatrice McDonald (d. 1895), granddaughter of Ambassador John Bernard Stallo and oil baron Alexander McDonald. Laura and her sister Helena both married European princes on the promise of their status as oil heiresses; but when the money was less than expected, and what they did inherit was lost to bad management, both sisters were divorced, and left with little to live on. Helena died from cancer at age 38; Laura's daughters were Francesca (1921-1998) and Camilla (b. 1922). Actually, Countess Dénes Széchényi, (née Émilie de Riquet, comtesse de Caraman-Chimay) in a painting by Philip de László. A color version of the painting is on Wikimedia Commons:

So old and....so cold. Indeed, the face that's watching you reminds me of those Belle Époque women (as she is), so sad in every photograph, or at least posing with a proud that lends a hand to sadness. Romanticism is always a particular.
