General Sickles is sitting next to his housekeeper and mistress Mrs. Wilmerding. General Sickes had one leg - thus the use of the carriage to get to the site. See comparison photograph here: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/3681834943/ Close by Bloody Angle, in the background of this photograph, is where Sickles lost his leg, " Alexander's guns poured destruction upon the "bloody angle," moving forward in the desperate charge led by Barksdale against that fatal salient. Under that impetuous assault Sickles's line tell back across the stone wall. Sickles, standing with his staff at the Trostle house, was struck by a ball which broke his leg and he was carried into the house." [ ref. page 287 of Picket and His Men by La Selle Corbell Pickett (Mrs. Gen. George E. Pickett). Chapter 34 - Gettysburg 2nd day. The vehicle at center is an automobile, not a carriage. There is a steering wheel and the driver is wearing goggles and a duster. It has the monogram A.L.O. on the side, probably in gold leaf. The horse is not hitched to the vehicle. It is wearing a saddle.

The Pennsylvania State Monument at Gettysburg is the highest in the park, and was built (in 1910) with a public viewing platform at the top. I wonder if the photographer of this aerial view shot from that vantage point?
