    At the Gettysburg Great Reunion in 1913. The Boy Scouts served as aids to the aged Civil War veterans. A great uncle who was one of those young Scouts recalled he'd never seen so many old men missing arms and legs.

    General Sickles is sitting next to his housekeeper and mistress Mrs. Wilmerding. General Sickes had one leg - thus the use of the carriage to get to the site. See comparison photograph here: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/3681834943/ Close by Bloody Angle, in the background of this photograph, is where Sickles lost his leg, " Alexander's guns poured destruction upon the "bloody angle," moving forward in the desperate charge led by Barksdale against that fatal salient.     The vehicle at center is an automobile, not a carriage. There is a steering wheel and the driver is wearing goggles and a duster. It has the monogram A.L.O. on the side, probably in gold leaf. The horse is not hitched to the vehicle. It is wearing a saddle.
