Hmm. It's a lot different now! I'm guessing that where the open field is, is where the current A1 route travels?

The photographer is standing in what is now, the middle of the North end of the Southbound car park at Birtley services. Looking over Malley's Hole (an old pit) to Harraton Colliery on the left. The Magnesium Limestone Escarpment (A Heugh) at Heugh Hall (or what the new generation prefer to call Old Quarrington) sticks out like a sore thumb on the horizon.
