I'm an 'outsider' and live in Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. I've travelled through Washington on many occasions via public transport (Wreckenton to Sunderlaand) and can still vision the scenes you've posted onto these pages. Washington's a fascinating mix of old mining villages with their unique layouts, joined together by newer housing and open green space.

This photograph is mid 1970s (not 60s) as the bus is in Northern General's National Bus Company poppy red livery with white fleetnames and the early white "double arrow" symbol.

The area changed so much from this scene!

I've a question; I've tried many times to see images of the asbestos spoil heap that blighted Washington back in the day. Do you have any photos of it that could be shown here?

Interesting that furnace ventilation still seems to be being used (short chimney to the left). 1965 is very late for that.
