The Pennsylvania State Monument at Gettysburg is the highest in the park, and was built (in 1910) with a public viewing platform at the top. I wonder if the photographer of this aerial view shot from that vantage point?

An equestrian portrait of Major General George Gordon Meade looking out over the battlefield at Gettysburg where the Union army under his direction won one of its greatest battles, defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee. He holds a pair of binoculars in his right hand and his hat in his left hand. A sword hangs from the left side of his saddle. The horse featured is Meade's favorite horse, Old Baldy. This photograph, by William H. Tipton, appears to have been made before a bronze plaque was attached to the right side of the base (although a bronze plaque on the front of the base appears to be present). Other photographs taken of veterans at the monument show the plaque in place at the time of the Great Reunion. A photograph of the model for the Meade statue was also made by Tipton. The statue was sculptured in 1895 by Henry K. Bush-Brown, (1857-1935), and the monument cost $37,500. The statue stands across the battlefield from the statue of General Robert E. 17th Connecticut Infantry Monument, sculptured by W. H. Curtis. It was installed June 24, 1884, and dedicated July 1, 1884. The inscription on the reverse side is:

ERECTED BY THE SURVIVORS/OF THE/17TH REGIMENT, CONNECTICUT VOLUNTEERS./2ND BRIGADE, 1ST DIVISION, 11TH CORPS,/IN MEMORY OF THEIR GALLANT COMRADES/ WHO FELL HERE ON THE 1ST DAY./AND ON THIS BATTLEFIELD ON THE 2ND & 3RD DAYS OF JULY/1863/17TH CONN. VOL'S. signed

Four plaques on the monument list the names of the thirty-five men in the 17th Connecticut Infantry killed during the battle of Gettysburg. – SIRIS
