    There is definitely a rope in the next picture. If you look at the larger version of it you can see someone's hand resting on it. Perhaps the line here really is a rope.

    General Sickles is sitting next to his housekeeper and mistress Mrs. Wilmerding. General Sickes had one leg - thus the use of the carriage to get to the site. See comparison photograph here: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/3681834943/ Close by Bloody Angle, in the background of this photograph, is where Sickles lost his leg, " Alexander's guns poured destruction upon the "bloody angle," moving forward in the desperate charge led by Barksdale against that fatal salient. Sickles, standing with his staff at the Trostle house, was struck by a ball which broke his leg and he was carried into the house."     The vehicle at center is an automobile, not a carriage. There is a steering wheel and the driver is wearing goggles and a duster. It has the monogram A.L.O. on the side, probably in gold leaf. The horse is not hitched to the vehicle. It is wearing a saddle.
