NORMAN VON NIDA knew how well a golf ball had been hit and where it had gone simply by the sound it made. In 1998, when legally blind, he gave a lesson to Nick Faldo, the winner of six major tournaments in the United States and Britain, who was competing at Royal Adelaide. After hearing Faldo hit a few shots, von Nida suggested his left-hand grip was too tight. The following day, after an opening 77, Faldo had a 69 and said the difference in his golf was "like a new day". Norman Guy von Nida, who has died at 93, was a remarkable man, a golfer who just failed to reach the very highest levels of the game, and a fine mentor. He was irascible, even pugnacious, and, at the same time, kindness and thoughtfulness personified. Von Nida won the caddies' championship in 1928, the Queensland amateur tournament aged 18, and turned professional in 1933. He was only 168 centimeters and 60 kilograms but had very strong hands and wrists, a benefit, he claimed, of working in the abattoir: "I had to break open the heads of sheep after their skulls had been partially split by a machine … I was unbeatable in an arm wrestle against anyone my size." He realised he had a future in golf when he beat American Gene Sarazen, then-world No.1, in a challenge match. One of the first leading Australian golfers to compete overseas, he won the Philippine Islands Open in 1938. After army service, he went to Britain in 1947, aged 32, helped by the United Licensed Victuallers Association but, with £17 in his pocket, needing to win tournaments to survive. Von Nida won the Australian Open three times. By the time he retired, with a bad back and failing eyesight, he had won 80 tournaments. One of his more notable successes as a mentor was with David Graham before Graham won the 1981 US Open. Von Nida's simple suggestion was that his fellow Australian move nearer to the ball by about four centimeters. At the age of 85, Von Nida, using yellow fluorescent balls, was still hitting shots. When he wrote his memoirs, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Peter Thomson all contributed accolades to the man called the father of Australian golf. He also had an eye for a racehorse, being instrumental in buying Ada Hunter, the dam of champion Kingston Town, from a stud in Italy for David Hains, who was taking golf lessons from "The Von".
