NYT of September 19, 1914 reports that Elaine V Rosenthal, an 18-yr old from Chicago, had reached the final of the US Women's Golf Championship query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F5071FFA3F5C1A728... See chicagolandgolf.com/illinoiswomensopen/elainerosenthal.html which suggests she lost in the final. www.corbisimages.com/stock-photo/rights-managed/U19300INP... is another picture taken on the same day.

Looks like there is no Helene V. Rosenthal. ElaineV. Rosenthal, a top woman golfer of the era, won the Women's Western Golf Championship on 8/27/15 (the day after the date on the picture), at the age of 19. books.google.com/books?id=aOTWUl-9LQoC&pg=PA240&l... Held at Midlothian Country Club, Midlothian, IL midlothiancc.org/history/tournaments.html There is a short biographical account in "Sports in Chicago", Elliott J. Gorn, ed., which recaps her career and discusses the issue of her being a Jewish female athlete in that era. books.google.com/books?id=iY6BK0FZS-EC&printsec=front... pp. 69-70

The picture at Corbis is identified as taken on September 18, 1914. She is wearing the same outfit as here, but that hardly makes it a certainty that the two pictures were taken on the same day. But I do wonder whether the photo is from 1914 (in sync with the other photos in the current batches) and Bain dug it out and used it in 1915 when she won her first tournament. Hard to tell.

Not impossible. I don't know if there was a convention at Bain about what date to scratch onto the glass negative.

I had not realized that bobbed hairdos were being worn as early as 1913.
