Vardon is responsible for popularizing the Vardon Grip aka the Overlapping Grip which has become the most used grip amongst golfers the world over. Wystan has noted that Bain's date on this negative is 9/17/13. This then is a photograph of the second day's qualifying play at The Country Club, Brookline of the 1913 U.S. Open Golf Championship. September and October 1913 were pretty heavy golf months in the United States, so the photograph which Wystan shows above from four days earlier may not be at Brookline.
