Date written on negative is 9/17/13 -- 2nd day of play of the USGA National Open Championship played at the Brookline Country Club. See NYT of Sept 17, 1913 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9F02EFDA163DE633A... and Sept 19,1913 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9407E4D7113BE633A... for reports on the tournament.

John Emery Harriman of Brookline, Massachusetts held a U.S. Patent for a "Flying Machine," but the patent drawings do not much resemble the aircraft in this picture. Patent number: 972448 Filing date: Feb 8, 1904 Issue date: Oct 11, 1910 However, the issue date on the patent is the same specified on this illustration, so it is clear that Harriman thought this aircraft was a variation on his invention. Harriman also held a number of other patents, for example a flatiron, a pipe-coupling device, and a rotary engine.
