    This image is very reminiscent of old Hartlepool which featured housing along the sea wall almost on the beach. It must have been quite an experience living in one of these--especially on stormy nights!

    Revd Wilks was awarded the Military Cross in November 1916:
    "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He tended the wounded for 48 hours under very heavy fire, displaying great courage and determination."

    The 1901 census records Walter as a 19 year old Assistant Chemist living at 32 Wellington Road, Bridlington, East Yorkshire, with his parents Samuel Hawes Wilks [b.1837 d.1913], Maria NiceWilks nee Allen [b.1844 d.1911] his older sisters Ellen [b.1866], Emilia [b.1879] and seven boarders and a visitor. His father’s occupation is given as Commercial Traveller in Wholesale Grocery [and still recorded in the 1913 Kelly’s Directory as living at the address].
    From 1903 to 1905 Walter was a student at the Wesleyan College, Headingly, Leeds [renamed Hinsley Hall and now the Catholic Diocese Pastoral & Conference Centre].
    His name is recorded on the dedication plaque for a stained glass window at the Hall.

    His 1901 home still exists although now converted in to flats.
