That is The Gap at Watsons Bay, a favourite suicide spot for troubled souls. What looks like someone about to jump is a point of rock, I think.

The Digital ID link above goes to the wrong photo, but I think it may be linked somehow to this one. More later ... The house in the foreground is the historic 'Clovelly' (built 1834, demolished 1903), at the time the residence of Sir John Robertson. Hence the current Robertson Park. www.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0014/1604... There is a photo of 'Clovelly' dated 1884 where the trees look in a fairly similar state to this photo - acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemDetailPaged.aspx?itemID=412763# And another before demolition in 1903 - acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemDetailPaged.aspx?itemID=412765#

beachcomber australia Fixed the link to Photo Investigator, thanks for picking that up. Those SLNSW photos are great to compare this one with...and to see the sad state 'Clovelly' was in before demolition. Will pass this info along, we can at least place a pre-1903 date. AB

The photo this one is next to in the 4481 Series and mistakenly connected with as being on the "north side" is probably part of a panorama. See notes and comments here - Could it be that this photo too is also the centre part of a three-frame panorama? Watson's Bay and The Gap seem to have been a favourite spot for photographers, and there are several photos which show the missing two thirds of the view. For example (only) - Opinions anyone? I think the date is nearer c.1885 than 1903, from the style of the photo.
