This photo seems to be almost a panorama with - ... but with different ships in the foreground.

I am fairly sure that is the ORIENT in the foreground (forewater?!). The two slightly-raked funnels, arrangement of ventilators, masts with spars and gaffs, and the white walls with portholes - all seem to match the ORIENT photo -

Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons Yes! Not quite a panorama, but you can see the intention - Doubly sure that is the ORIENT.

An educated guess - that is the Orient Line LUSITANIA bottom right. Compare the bow, anchor, rigging, davitts, and figurehead with - Megazoom at PhM - from.ph/30572

beachcomber australia Good point re LUSITANIA, a bit difficult to tell. Although on closer inspection it appears to be washing day on deck there..? We LOVED the Petty's Hotel montage! The Fawlty Towers music was a nice touch :) As you mention, it must have been a favourite with photographers, who also seemed to loved capturing it from the same corner!

This photo was taken after 1883. On the Saturday night of 12th Nov 1883, there was a fire between Lower George St & Pitt St just south of Queens Wharf, next to the Commissariat Stores. The fire destroyed the old 1820s counting house of Berry & Wollstonecraft, which was next south to Mary Reibey's house. In the 1870s Lower George St had become an enclave of Chinese merchants. In the picture, above, John Cowper has put a box around the PS Brighton. In the top left hand corner in that box, you can see the remains of the wall of Berry & Wollstonecraft's counting house, here in this picture was occupied by Sun Kum On Importer. About the EMU (1865 - this ISN'T the 1841 ship) -

"The Manly paddler 'Brightside' (269 tons - 950 passengers) was built in Glasgow and exported to Brisbane to be reassembled for use on the Brisbane River and Moreton Bay as PS EMU. She was originally owned by the Queensland Steam Navigation Company. After another owner, she came to the Port Jackson Steam Boat Company in January 1877 and stayed with the various forms of the Manly ferry company until 1909. She was renamed BRIGHTSIDE in 1887 and sank in June 1897. She was converted into a cargo ferry in 1902 and worked the Manly run in that role until 1908. After being gutted by fire in 1908 the hull was converted to a lighter, but was broken up in 1909."
