Mike Kelly Mike, thanks for adding this, it sort of completes the "circle". In tramway and railway circles (at this stage the tramways were administered by the Railways Department) it was called 'The Bridge Street Yard'.

It is an unusual photo to find in a personal album - perhaps the photographer was a tram enthusiast too! Probably about 1897, before electric trams. Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons NB - NOT Bennelong / Fort Macquarie (see tags). Location NE corner of Bridge and Phillip Streets, where the Intercontinental Hotel now is. I think this may be it - the next point east from the actual Glebe Point - the twin-gabled house is still there, but others seem to have vanished for some reason - goo.gl/maps/ya67e . The wonderful houses would have a great view of the abattoirs, including sounds and smells

Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons I have a feeling that this, is in fact, the PS Brighton. The Fairlight had only one funnel, the Brighton had two. Here is a pic of the Brighton arriving at Manly Wharf.

The ferry is, I believe, the Manly II, launched 1896, disposed of in 1924.
Capacity 820 passengers - 45 m x 8 m 229 gross tons, nett tonnage 139 tons. (Ref 'The Ferries of Sydney' Graeme Andrews and www.shf.org.au/archives-research/photographic-collections...

When Manly ( a screw ship) arrived she joined the Fairlight, Brighton and Narrabeen (all paddle steamers. Manly was the fastest and set a record time for the run of 22 minutes, which has apparently never been beaten by any conventional ferry.
