  The V.R. sign might help identify exactly which gun position this was. There are several all over Middle Head and Georges Heights - maps.google.com.au/maps?q=Sydney+NSW&hl=en&ll=-33...

  beachcomber australia Hmm harder than I first thought! The SLNSW has another Bayliss photo in which this gun appears to feature, and you can just make out a sign to the left that would read 'No ? Gun', as in this Henry King pic where a sign reading 'No. 1 Gun' is visible'. Perhaps you can make out the number with your super-sleuth eyes?!

  Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons pellethepoet That is the problem with the old (and sometimes new) photos of these various forts - they are often mis-named, like the NLA and Ennis book both say "Middle Head", when it is obviously Georges Head from the alignment of South and North Heads (see the GoogleSatellite photo). Very confusing, and it gets perpetuated. Btw the best way to see is with the GoogleEarth plugin and the 3D enabled. In a previous existence I was a "dish-pig" at the old Officers Mess behind this battery, and used to wander all over it in my tea-break. The tunnels and underground rooms were very spooky!
