    The street looks uncannily clean considering the fact that there were horses on it; was the photo retouched? Or, it could be that New York had an extremely efficient group of street-sweepers at the time.

    William K. Vanderbilt purchased the entire block on Fifth Avenue (between 51st and 52nd Streets) in 1879. He had architects John B. Snook and Charles Atwood design "twin houses" on the lot. The Vanderbilt Twin Houses are shown on the left of the photo.

    I like this photos because there doesn't seem to be a lot of junk in the photo... You know like advertising signs and the streets look clean and neat... No City looks like this anymore....
