A four and a single scull in this one. The scull would be much quicker off the mark but the four would wear him down after a couple of hundred yard. Great though for each to practice their starts beside each other.

River Mill, possibly Singletons Mill on the Hawkesbury River, c 1900

This is the derelict mill of James Singleton (1777-1849) which was demolished in the early 1900s after milling declined from 1870. Being on a tidal river it required a slightly different method in powering the 5M diameter water wheel than the usual water rushing past the wheel through a diversion channel or 'race'. A dam was filled by the rising tide, the inlet valve was closed at high water & on the falling tide the stored water was released through the mill race to turn the wheel.
