This is the derelict mill of James Singleton (1777-1849) which was demolished in the early 1900s after milling declined from 1870. Being on a tidal river it required a slightly different method in powering the 5M diameter water wheel than the usual water rushing past the wheel through a diversion channel or 'race'. A dam was filled by the rising tide, the inlet valve was closed at high water & on the falling tide the stored water was released through the mill race to turn the wheel.

Is that the original one from St Albans (washed away in abt 1889)? Haven't seen any images of that one to verify.

Scott Bird Hi ozbirdy, this one has had us stumped for a while. There have been suggestions that this may not be the Hawkesbury at all, so for now it remains a mystery. I will enter your suggestion into our database for our records. Hopefully one day we will be able to confidently identify it. :)
