May Pole - Central Park (LOC)

    I would say it is a portray of regimentation. The looks on the girls faces are not happy. The May Pole is supposed to be an unbridled celebration, but they are in full uniform, and it somehow shows the contrast of what girls were allowed to do .. a MayPole, in uniform no less.

    Back in those days people did not smile for photos, they were serious, formal photos and often took exposure time due to the film. Personally I prefer the old photos, can't stand modern photos with the faked smile for the camera. Man, what an UGLY bunch of girls this crowd was, geez, just look at some of those faces, holy cow, some of them could sink a ship! More sobering, just imagine- every person in this photo is deceased- they all grew up, lived a life and are gone, only this brief snapshot in time is what we see of these nameless girls.
