Title should be called "Digg - 1940's Style"

Based on the news displayed in the window, this photo was taken on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1940. One of the earthquake news summaries says, "8:45 this morning. More pronounced than the one last Friday morning"; there were 2 earthquakes of note in New England in December 1940, one on the 20th and one on the 24th. 12/20/1940 was a Friday, and with the bit of Santa news also posted, it's definitely the 24th for this photo.

William Joseph Hill, one of the best known pop songwriters of that time lost his battle with alcohol abuse and died of heart failure. On Sept 24th, 1940, he performed at the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco. Also performing at that show; Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, and Johnny Mercer. Three months later, on Christmas Eve, he died of heart failure in a Boston hotel room. He was only 42.

Title: Hey, who took the TV's? "I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night..."

This building is still there, and that newspaper is still around too.

The month and year of my birth in Chillicothe, Mo. My folks literally lived in a tarpaper shack. They moved to Norwalk, Ca. three months later. Thank you, folks! I don't like the cold at all, at all! My dad later worked in the war industry and in the merchan marine. My mom was one of thosee "Rosie the riviters" in Long Beach.

Gee, I wish the stupid, smart-ass notes would be deleted off these photos.

I agree about the stupid notes , teenager type of attention seeking and annoying .

What's the matter with those people? Didn't they have any internets???

The big sheet in the middle column mentions Winston Churchill bidding the Italian people to "oust Mussolini," their fascist dictator. He made that speech on December 23, 1940. During the 1950s and 60s my mother worked here at the Enterprise, writing articles for the social pages. I went inside the building a few times to see her, but in 1959 went in on my own to read an essay I wrote on WBET, the newspaper's radio station.

I am so obsesed with the LOC's photo stream

I remember as a kid, I used to see this and people gatherd th read some of the headlines that would appear in the paper! The Brockton Enterprise had been sold out to the the ledger. The Enterprise does not belong to the people of Brockton anymore!
