Corn field, Ga.? (LOC)

Power line on the horizon. If this is Greene County, Georgia, the poles and wires belong to the members of Rayle EMC (Electric Membership Cooperative). The Frankliln D. Roosevelt Administration initiated a lot of new government agencies to rescue the country from the Great Depression. Among those programs was the Rural Electrification Administration which was empowered to provide or guarantee low intererst loans to Electric Membership Cooperatives. No 'for profit' electric utility would take the loss of building the grid where only one or two subscribers were available per mile of line. The EMCs saved the day and electrified all of that part of America that would still be in the dark today without the foresight of one of our greatest presidents.

Santa Fe R.R. line leaving Cadiz, Calif. This town is a junction point with a branch going to Phoenix, Ariz. (LOC)

  • Chuck Walla said:
In modern times, the line going south from Cadiz is now leased to the Arizona and California which operates out of Parker, Arizona. The line goes south to Rice, California then east to Parker. Corrections/updates from others are welcome.

This is my grandparents house right before they bought it. This is the 170 range of Walnut St. In New Bedford MA. Was not expecting to find a picture of it on the internet. Thank you for publishing this.

This reminds me of Walker Evans with the industrial stacks directly behind the homes. Cool photo.
