  The upper image is Burgess' rendition of the Boeing XF8B-1, the company's final attempt at a Navy fighter design. He was obviously very taken with the aesthetics of the "Shooting Star," as he painted it over a dozen times in this collection. Here, he paints both YP-80As at the north Pole (although neither, to my knowledge, ever deployed to Alaska for cold weather testing). Under Project EXTRAVERSION, YP-80As serial 44-83028. and 44-83029 had been deployed to Italy in the closing months of the war for operational testing - NO COMBAT. two birds had also been sent to the UK under the same program (44-83026 & -027), but both were destroyed in fatal crashes...

  The absurdity of the caption is frightening. You don't MAKE natural gas. These tanks held manufactured gas. The gas was a by-product of the coke manufacturing process. Natural gas was quite rare in New England in 1941. What few pipelines that existed carried oil and not much of it.

  I always imagined these houses in color, when I see them in old photos.. but man they were painted gray! how depressing. I guess they didn't need color photography before the 50's everything was grey or black and white
