Beautiful Baroness Causes a Stir at...‎ New York Times - June 29, 1913 A sensation was caused this week in the Russian ballet at the Theatre Champs Elysees by the beautiful Baroness Yele de Guestre, who attended a performance in a Greek costume, her bare feet shod with sandals of white leather and damascened gold and buckled at the ankle with a gold clasp. query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F10D16FC3A5F13...

Great shot but looking at the line of litter along the bank they look like environmental vandals. Those Victorians certainly left a lot to be desired!!!

May I ask: Where do you find these images?
  • National Library of Ireland on The Commons said:
Swordscookie I'd hope they did pick it all up, or that at least the guides did...
  • Richard Eric said:
Ah, I'd guess that their sense of litter-buggery, or vandalism was different from our own! Wouldn't you? And that someone among them picked up the paper... which would have degraded in any case... Cut the auld guys a bit o' slack..

Richard Eric In all areas of our photographic collections, Richard. The Pic of the Day is the most straightforward, in that I'm searching for photos taken on a particular date. The other photos that are uploaded every day can be serendipitous finds; have subject matter that I hope will be interesting to all of you; photos that I know some of you will know a hell of a lot more about than we do, so that when you comment, we learn more and can add that information to our NLI catalogue. Some photos I happen on because of other projects that are going on here at the National Library. Sometimes it's as simple as the fact that I have seen a photo and love it (or because it makes me laugh), and I hope it'll have the same effect on others....
