The road in the foreground is Southback of Canongate now called Holyrood Road. The junction with St John's Street and Southback of Canongate is to the left of the photographer. The stairs on the left edge lead up to Robb's Entry, a short lane which runs in a parallel direction to Holyrood Road. University of Edinburgh Building now stands on this site. Off to the right of this photograph is Winter's Land, OS Town Plan1893

The left edge of this photograph shows the junction of the Pleasance and Arthur Street. The left edge shows the U.P Church which stood on the corner.

Did wonder if this was on Gifford Park. Close to the junction with Buccleuch Street.

I agree with Fraser it's north-west corner of Gifford Park. Curved corner of and angle of tenement beside the narrow pend are distinctive and clearly visible on period OS maps. View through the pend shows the back of the tenements at St Partick Square. This view was blocked in 1930 when the New Victoria Cinema was built in the gap. Tenement on the left of which only a thin slice appears in the photo still stands.
