The road in the foreground is Southback of Canongate now called Holyrood Road. The junction with St John's Street and Southback of Canongate is to the left of the photographer. The stairs lead up to Robb's Entry, a short lane which runs in a parallel direction to Holyrood Road. University of Edinburgh Building now stands on this site. OS Town Plan1893
