Are you surprised? Those are "iron lungs" of Guinness and there was carousing for months afterwards and the journo's were the leaders in the field! Seriously it really is a surprise that there is no mention in the papers, big event then and now!

Swordscookie That's what I would have thought, but I tried a range of wide and narrow search terms and came up empty! Are you being poetic, or is/was "iron lungs" a nickname for the Guinness barrels?

When they changed over to aluminium from wood there were a number of stories in the news of people who were being kept alive in "iron lungs" which did the breathing for them and so the metal kegs became known as "iron lungs as a result. I see that master of research blackpoolbeach has come up with more information on the incident including some of your photographs!

blackpoolbeach I know this is not in quite the right spot, but I find it very difficult to get co-ordinates from these OSI maps (brilliant as they are!). Do you know how to get lat and long from them that will suit any normal map, like here on Flickr or on Google Maps? Their X and Y do not compute with me, I'm afraid... :(
