One of the outstanding features of the Queensland Bottle tree is its bulbous trunk which, after around 10 years of growth, can be as large as 4 meters in diameter. This tree is extremely drought tolerant but ideally likes plenty of water which it stores between the inner bark and the trunk. This gives it its unique shape and the reason for its common name of the “Bottle Tree”. Its scientific name is Brachychiton rupestris. The name comes from its oddly shaped trunk, which resembles a chubby, narrow-necked bottle. The Queensland Bottle Tree does not have any known subspecies but does have some relatives: the Proserpine Bottle Tree, or Brachychiton Compactus, which can only be found near Proserpine, and the Ormeau Bottle tree, which is similar to the Proserpine Bottle Tree, with only slight variations in leaf colour and shape. Danbulla is bounded on the west by Lake Tinaroo. Most of the locality is a protected area except for a small part of the southeast of the locality. The protected areas include Danbulla National Park, Danbulla State Forest, Danbulla South Forest Reserve, Gadgarra National Park, and Gadgarra Forest Reserve. Stretching from Tinaroo Range to Lamb Range on the Atherton Tableland, Danbulla State Forest surrounds picturesque Lake Tinaroo on the Barron River. This beautiful forest contains tropical rainforest and open forest remnants, softwood plantation forests, a crater lake, and historic sites. The forest is home to a wonderful variety of animals including the northern bettong, green-eyed treefrog, Lumholtz tree-kangaroo, Herbert River ringtail possum, red goshawk, and many rare plants. Danbulla contains the magnificent Cathedral Fig, a strangler fig reputed to be the best place for a dawn bird chorus on the tableland. Danbulla State Forest is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The forest is managed for a variety of sustainable uses for the benefit of the community.
