BOTTLE-NECK REMOVED. NEW SOUTH HEAD-ROAD. Five hundred men of the permanent way staff of the Tramway Department removed the bottle-neck opposite the Stadium at the week-end. Owing to the improvement scheme for New South Head-road by the Main Roads Board, the bottle-neck created by the front of the tramway sheds opposite the Stadium at Rushcutter Bay had to be widened. The front of the building has been put back 20 feet, and. as the tramway lines had to be altered to do this, 500 men worked day and night from Saturday until this morning to complete the work. The board intends to cover over the big drain which runs alongside the tramway depot, thus allowing the footpath, which borders the park, to be continued. A terrace of shops and houses has been removed. About 20 feet have been added to the roadway by the Improvement, which will ease a congestion which was the cause of much heart-burning, especially upon Saturday nights.

I think it must be the South East corner - GoogleMapsStreetView - goo.gl/maps/JPYk9 EDIT - WRONG!

There must be multiple Cricketer's Arms Hotels. I remember one on the corner of Cleveland and Dowling Streets, Surry Hills and I notice there is a current Cricketer's Arms Hotel in Fitzroy Street, Surry Hills. The hotel in the above photo seems to be now known as The Abbott's Hotel and has been much extended and the facade modified.

Corinneski Abbott's Hotel is on the North East corner (see streetview above). I had another look, and wouldn't you know it, there used to be a hotel on the North West corner, which is still named "Cricketer's Arms" in the top plasterwork - see different GoogleMapsStreetView - goo.gl/maps/OS6vn That makes sense when you look at the layout of the tramways (on three streets, not four) on this c.1928 map at full size - the Cricketer's Arms is marked as Hannam's Hotel.

There's another print of this image in the SLNSW - acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemDetailPaged.aspx?itemID=178668 - dated November 1926 and "resumption". I think the old hotel was resumed shortly after this photo to enable a tramway corner (see map above). Then the new hotel was built slightly back (see satellite photo). Just to confuse things further a revised equivalent GoogleMapsStreetView - goo.gl/maps/TeqGx

Isn't there the Bat and Ball hotel on the corner of cleveland street ?
