According to nyphil.org/explore/history "A media pioneer, the [New York] Philharmonic began radio broadcasts in 1922." Presumably Mengelberg was an enthusiast for radio. In the Washington Times. April 03, 1924, Image 24, right-hand column, chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84026749/1924-04-03/ed-... the newspaper's music critic, William Moore, wrote a tongue-in-cheek piece beginning "A new day is dawning for the poor, overworked music critic. The time Is not far distant when no longer will he be compelled to personally attend three or four musical events each night, write his reviews, and catch the Bloodshot-and-Cinder for his suburban retreat." More seriously, he reviewed a WCAP broadcast of the New York Philharmonic conducted by Mengelberg using a crystal radio set he had built for 15 cents.
