I had a look for this chap on the web - trying to work out what sport he played. I think there's a typo in your title here - "Tuominen"? - but it seems like his name might be "Tueminen," and in fact, there's another LOC record that says as much.

This is probably Finnish wrestler Nestori Tuominen, who won the gold medal (note: annoying popup ad with audio at that link) in the 67.0kg class in the Greco-Roman style at the Wrestling World Championships in 1911. Also, note that the surname is spelled correctly by Bain on this negative.

Righto... misspelled in other places then :)

whyaduck: Thanks for the heads up! You're correct, this is Nestori Tuominen, a Finnish Greco-Roman wrestler. We're going to change the source data and reload the description here in Flickr to match. (And we'll be fixing that other LOC record depicting him as well, George!)

"Assuming an Irish name was not unusual in that era of boxing; there were Jewish fighters with Irish names too; and Jim Flynn, the only man who ever knocked out Jack Dempsey, was actually named Andrea Chiariglione. One reason for the name changes is that there were not enough Irish fighters to satisfy the large number of Irish fans." -- Pete Hamill, "Why Sinatra Matters" (Boston: Little, Brown, 1998), p. 58.
