Jack Johnson & Jim Flynn fought for the heavyweight championship on July 4, 1912 in Las Vegas, NV. Some, apparently, were not ready for desegregated boxing: query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9F05EFDE113AE633A... Some even thought it might mean the boxing itself: query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9A06E0D91231E233A...

The Jack Johnson vs. Jim Flynn contest (on July 4, 1912) was fought in Las Vegas, NEW MEXICO -- not NV. Advertised to last for 45 rounds, it was stopped by the New Mexico state police after only nine. Flynn was outclassed and kept trying to cheat; Johnson was declared the winner. Here is the New York Times report: query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?_r=1&res=9806E...

"Assuming an Irish name was not unusual in that era of boxing; there were Jewish fighters with Irish names too; and Jim Flynn, the only man who ever knocked out Jack Dempsey, was actually named Andrea Chiariglione. One reason for the name changes is that there were not enough Irish fighters to satisfy the large number of Irish fans." -- Pete Hamill, "Why Sinatra Matters" (Boston: Little, Brown, 1998), p. 58.
