Arundel Square

I can see what you mean NLI, it does have a very Dickensian feel to it. What we of the 21st century need to remember is that there was very little change in the mode of dress, means of transport and building methods between the end of the 17th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The first supermarkets were opened in my lifetime and shopping malls and superstores are really a recent innovation. It is an excellent shot and very atmospheric!!

Swordscookie I'd agree, this pic is certainly pre-1900. Also, notice the cast-iron water pump in the foreground, of the type still seen around the country today. I like the gas lamp on the house corner too. Here's a view of the same location (approx) on Google Street-View maps.google.com/maps?q=Arundel+Square,+Waterford,+Ireland... All the building seen on the right have gone. Stuart.

Arundel Gate and castle was in the laneway on the extreme right in the picture.

Jim Flynn, Tommy Ryan (LOC)

This photo is a promotion for the July 4, 1912 fight between Jim Flynn and Jack Johnson. Tommy Ryan, a retired middleweight champion, was Flynn's trainer until June 17, when he quit after an quarrel of unknown subject with promoter Jack Curley (NY Times June 18 1912, "Ryan Quits as Flynn's Trainer"). The Library of Congress also has a photo of Flynn at his training camp, and Johnson sparring.

Hi, this photo is being discussed in one of the projects in the Flickr Commons group, and we'd love to have this added to the group pool!

"Assuming an Irish name was not unusual in that era of boxing; there were Jewish fighters with Irish names too; and Jim Flynn, the only man who ever knocked out Jack Dempsey, was actually named Andrea Chiariglione. One reason for the name changes is that there were not enough Irish fighters to satisfy the large number of Irish fans." -- Pete Hamill, "Why Sinatra Matters" (Boston: Little, Brown, 1998), p. 58.
