This photo is a promotion for the July 4, 1912 fight between Jim Flynn and Jack Johnson. Tommy Ryan, a retired middleweight champion, was Flynn's trainer until June 17, when he quit after an quarrel of unknown subject with promoter Jack Curley (NY Times June 18 1912, "Ryan Quits as Flynn's Trainer"). The Library of Congress also has a photo of Flynn at his training camp, and Johnson sparring.

Flynn, who had a reputation for fighting mean and dirty, met Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson in the ring at Las Vegas, New Mexico, on July 4, 1912. Johnson had beaten Flynn in a non-title fight in 1907. Johnson hadn't trained for the rematch, but was still able to hold Flynn off for 14 rounds. Flynn, frustrated, engaged in obvious head-butting of his opponent, so the referee ended the fight and awarded victory to Johnson. This appears to be an old photo of Fireman Jim Flynn that the Bain agency copied and circulated to its subscribers at the end of November, 1913, to publicize Flynn's two upcoming fights in New York City, against Battling Levinsky (December 9) and George Rodel (December 22). A dozen other Bain/LOC photos of Jim Flynn have already been posted to Flickr.
