"Assuming an Irish name was not unusual in that era of boxing; there were Jewish fighters with Irish names too; and Jim Flynn, the only man who ever knocked out Jack Dempsey, was actually named Andrea Chiariglione. One reason for the name changes is that there were not enough Irish fighters to satisfy the large number of Irish fans." -- Pete Hamill, "Why Sinatra Matters" (Boston: Little, Brown, 1998), p. 58.

This appears to be an old photo of Fireman Jim Flynn that the Bain agency copied and circulated to its subscribers at the end of November, 1913, to publicize Flynn's two upcoming fights in New York City, against Battling Levinsky (December 9) and George Rodel (December 22). A dozen other Bain/LOC photos of Jim Flynn have already been posted to Flickr. He was not born a Flynn: "Assuming an Irish name was not unusual in that era of boxing; there were Jewish fighters with Irish names too; and Jim Flynn, the only man who ever knocked out Jack Dempsey, was actually named Andrea Chiariglione. One reason for the name changes is that there were not enough Irish fighters to satisfy the large number of Irish fans." -- Pete Hamill, "Why Sinatra Matters" (Boston: Little, Brown, 1998), p. 58.

Wystan: Thanks for the information on Mr. Flynn - and his real name! We will add to the record when we update - and take a look at the other photos of him as well.
