"Willard-Davis Contest.
Jess Willard knocked out George ( One Round) Davis ' in the second round at Buffalo, on Dec; ; 12, 1913. The Kansas Cowboy was then climbing the ladder of success - which finally led to his attaining the heavy-weight championship. Davis, the "Fistic Bartender," had an excellent record but he was an easy victim for The Cowboy. Davis earned his name of "One Round" by stopping his men in the initial chapter, but after he began taking on the good fellows, he did not fare so well. He knocked out Jim Stewart the Brooklyn heavyweight, in the seventh round and defeated the veteran Jack (Twin) Sullivan In three rounds, but he was twice knocked out by Soldier Kearns, and Jack Geyer stopped him in one round early in 1914."

He retired in 1953 after 32 years as New York Central Railroad policeman. This means that his boxing career ended ~1921. I suspect that this portrait is from near the beginning of his career, i.e., ~1912.

A 1914 interview after an injury in a fight with Geyer, suggests that George W. Jaus was not intent on a long boxing career. He was joining his brother in the wholesale and retail fish business.

In 1926, Philadelphia had a Sesquicentennial celebration, in which Dempsey had some involvement. See NYT of August 23, 1926 timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1926/08/23/98852419... in which Dempsey "expects to go to Philadelphia to lunch with Mayor Kendrick." Given the date written on the negative, it seems likely that the Dempseys had visited Kendrick earlier in the year. In February, Kendrick had voiced opposition to having a fight as part of the sesquicentennial event. See NYT of Feb 16, 1926 timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1926/02/17/10005044... The date written on the negative, which looks to be 6/25/26, would have been in the first month of the event.
