beachcomber australia Mangrove Rat It is a great ole' steamer. It was donated by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, so you are right beachcomber, it is likely that it was decorated for a regatta.

This is the coastal paddle steamer Newcastle (built 1884) that ran up the coast from Sydney to Newcastle before the Hawkesbury railway bridge and tunnels were built. She was stripped to become a hulk in 1928 and was scuttled off the coast in 1933.

And check it out, I thought I recognised the image of women rowing that appears at the top of the newspaper article. Did you read the article about the Highland Society on the next page? Very nearly as interesting as the regatta ;)
