Tom Sullivan (LOC)

    This could well be Tom Sullivan, professional sculler/oarsman in the 1890's. One time Professional Sculling Championship of England and challenger for the Professional Sculling Championship of the World. He (if this is the same person) was born in 1868, Auckland, New Zealand. So in 1910 for example he would have been 48. This probably fits the age of the Tom Sullivan in the picture. By 1910 Sullivan was a very successful rowing coach. Coaching mainly in Germany before WW1 until his death. Would the LOC collection be more likely to include sports 'stars' than attorneys? (I hope so). I have a younger photo of the rowing Tom Sullivan and it looks remarkably similar. Happy to provide more information on him.

BTW, regarding your question of what types of personages the LoC is most likely to collect: in this case, it really depends on what George Grantham Bain considered newsworthy in 1910s New York.     I've just been to see an August Sander exhibition in Edinburgh. This might be a little controversial, but I think these pictures are better than his. I suppose the big difference is that Sander's have this terrible weight of history hanging over them. When you look at pictures of German people in the 1920s and 30s, you wonder what on earth happened to them. The Sweidsh pictures don't have that sadness about them. And technically, they're magnificent.
