  The church steeple in the previous photo is not seen here. Smoke seems to be coming from a large area. Could this be a burning church?

  You're right Bill Jarvis - same fence, same houses, no church spire... obscured by smoke or burned to the ground? Hmm, I may get our @HFXFireHistory friends onto looking for an early twentieth century church fire. Thanks for your help!

  Right you are, C B - thanks! This was confirmed via email by Schmidtville resident and heritage activist William Breckenridge, who notes he now lives in one of these houses. According to neighbourhood stories, the 3-story house is 18 Clyde Street which was demolished in the late 1950s after the 3rd floor collapsed with a baby still in its bed!

  That does look like the right distance down from the Commons, Cara MacDonald - but since the building on the corner is not the same as the row-houses there now, we can't be sure. Any other clues?

  Looks like Vernon at Pepperell, looking north toward Canadian Tire at the corner, and Saint Joseph's Orphanage on the other side of Quinpool.
