Cyclist and car on unidentified [Halifax] street - possibly South Park St.

  • Lynn Currie said:
Maybe South Park St at Inglis, before Young Ave.
  • Halifax Municipal Archives said:
The trolley tracks did go along South Park St., and turned up Inglis so you could be right, Lynn Currie Thanks!
  • Abbie Hudson said:
In 1923 we switched to driving on the right side of the road. Same with the steering wheel switching to the left side. Although blurry, it looks like this car has the steering wheel on the left side and is driving on the right... so I'm thinking it must be after 1923

Abbie Hudson Thanks for your help with this, Abbie! That's a great piece of information to go on. We've updated the date here and in the database.

Identified! Probably 1010-1014 Barrington St.

A close-up view shows the civic numbers are 1010 and 1014, but of what street? People who grew up in the area and did deliveries there have emailed to say they think this could be the west side of Barrington before Artz St., partly because of the slope of the laneway. That fits with the old civic numbers for that section of Barrington. Does that fit with your memory?
  • Halifax Municipal Archives said:
St. Mary's University cartographer Will Flanagan found these buildings on this aerial photograph (102-16N-0039.4) and sent us an email to confirm their location on the west side of Barrington St. just before North St. The civic address may have changed over the years, but it does look like we have a location - Thanks Will!

Identified! Corner of Vernon and Pepperell Streets looking north to Quinpool Rd.

The car is a 1964 Chevrolet.

Corner of Cornwallis and Bauer looking up towards the Commons?
  • Halifax Municipal Archives said:
Thanks for another date verification Bill Jarvis!
  • Halifax Municipal Archives said:
That does look like the right distance down from the Commons, Cara MacDonald - but since the building on the corner is not the same as the row-houses there now, we can't be sure. Any other clues?

Looks like Vernon at Pepperell, looking north toward Canadian Tire at the corner, and Saint Joseph's Orphanage on the other side of Quinpool. Refs: Aerial overview of the city - Quinpool Road (Retrieval Code #102-105-1-49-1088-54) and Vernon St. [corner of Pepperell St.] (Retrieval Code 102-39-1-1272)
