Could be Clyde and Brenton where the old Butcher shop used to be.

I was thinking that butcher shop as well, it would have been to the right of the butcher in the photo. The shop I thought was on on the east side of either Brenton (makes more sense) or Dresden almost at Morris, note the grade uphill to the left - Clyde is level - so we're looking north. Can't recall which street the shop was on but it was a hopping shop, the front was red and it had a very narrow street frontage. They delivered too as my neighbour got theirs from them as no car - alot of dollies going in and out so they may very well have wholesaled too. Was still there in the late 60's. The name of it will come to me......I hope; be nice to have an old phone book.

Will have to drive to the southern foot of Victoria Rd to see if that's a possibility. Still the shot would be facing north with butcher standing on the east side of Victoria nr. Inglis. Anyone recall a store there where the Oriental Restaurant once was?

Thanks Megan Couture and John Weigl! The 1960 directory lists a bunch of butchers in Halifax, but none of them are on Brenton or Clyde. There is a G. E. Barbour Co. Ltd. foods listed on Brenton, though. It was near Morris and on the east side of the street, which coincides with your thought, John, that we're looking north. Could that be it?

Last night the store I was thinking of came to mind without warning, it was Horne's and was not solely a butcher. Yes Barbour rings a bell for Brenton so Horne's must have been one or two streets east. Looking at the street grade I'm now thinking it fits Victoria road southern end better. I'm walking down Brenton this morning and will report back if houses jive. john

Hollis Street runs north-south so the sides of the street should be east-west. This view is taken from the southwest corner of that intersection, looking northeast. Don Schelew's dry cleaning business (139 Hollis) and Fader's Pharmacy (141-43 Hollis) are listed in Might's 1950 Directory. 'The Hollis' hotel is on that corner today.

Thanks for the correction James White We've changed the description here and in our on-line database to note the photo shows the east side of Hollis, not the south.

Just wondering if you have any information about the old address is 92 Hollis St. I believe it was a boarding house and possibly could’ve been used for seniors Especially veterans I have some documentation saying that people who live there were employed at Russell House. I would appreciate any information. My great aunt Isabella Kennedy was the proprietors of Russell House. Hoping someone can help me thank you Linda kennedy

I've looked through our Halifax City Directories, but the earliest mention of a 92 Hollis Street is for the Maritime Telegraph & Telephone Company at 88-92 Hollis, and it looks like that address later became 1520 Hollis before being disused. I also looked through our building permits however I wasn't able to find any permit referencing a boarding house at the address.
