There's a calendar on the wall behind him, but the month on it is inscrutable. I think it is safe to assume that the photo was circulated in connection with the announcement of his mayoralty candidacy in August, 1913.

LOC: Keep in mind that in New York, the Supreme Courts (each county has one) are trial courts of general jurisdiction, like the Superior Courts in other jurisdictions. Referring to the subject by his early-career (1903-13) judicial post isn't really accurate, especially since this picture, and the others in the Bain Collection, show him in his post as Chairman of the New York State Public Services Commission, a higher statewide post. I think referring to him as a judge and politician is a better general description.

In 1913, Edward Everett McCall was appointed by the governor to the Public Service Commission. in 1914 1913 also, Edward Everett McCall was running for mayor of New York City, with Tammany Hall backing. The daughters are Constance (standing) and Ella--Ella married William Maloney in 1915.

What is that on the right side of Constance's face?

If you look at the photo of Constance and the dogs, next to this, you can see that her hat has a veil; I assume it's probably the veil.

It is likely that McCall was named for the famous 19th-century orator Edward Everett (the windbag who shared the platform with Abraham Lincoln at the dedication of the Gettysburg Cemetery). That truly was an unflattering design on the veil that the young lady wore: it resembles a bad skin disease, or an attack of giant flying insects . . . .
