Parkhurst, pastor of Madison Square Presbyterian Church in New York City, was quite often in the news. NYT of Jan 8, 1916 select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F70811FC39591A7A... reported an accusation by stockholders of the Franklin Company that he had written letters to Franklin stockholders encouraging them to agree to a sale of Franklin to the American Candy Manufacturing Company, of which Parkhurst was a stockholder and Vice-president. Litigation over the sale had driven American Candy into bankruptcy. NYT of Jan 26, 1916 had more on the story select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F30B1EF8355C1373... NYT of Dec 22, 1916 select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F70811FC39591A7A... reports that Dr. Parkhurst was honored on 12/21/1916 for 36 year of service by the New York Federation of Churches and mentions that he believed churches had not taken enough action to prevent the "European War."

McClellan was mayor of New York City from 1904 to 1909. He was the son of Civil War General George B. McClellan, Sr. Ref: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_B._McClellan,_Jr. Murphy was head of Tammany Hall from 1902 until his death in 1924. Don't let that (lack of) wikipedia article fool you. Murphy was as corrupt as any other Tammany Hall bosses. The New York Tribune cover (using photo manipulation) tells readers that while McClellan was just elected the mayor of NYC, the REAL power behind the mayor, and the person that will actually make things happen in nyc is the man seated behind McClellan; Charles Murphy, the Tammany Hall boss.

" This cartoon about the 1905 mayoral election in New York City shows the Tammany Tiger licking his chops with satisfaction, having devoured a belly full of political enemies, including Republican boss Thomas Platt and the Reverend Charles Parkhurst, the crusading reformer. Mayor George B. McClellan Jr., a candidate for reelection, holds the tiger's leash but cannot control the behavior of the Tammany beast. The young, 39-year-old mayor appears as a boy sitting, like Humpty Dumpty, atop a wall; in this case, one that protects the "Gardens of Murfiz" (named for Tammany boss Charles F. Murphy), where illicit money grows on trees.

The one who has escaped the tiger's path of destruction is William Travers Jerome, the New York district attorney (1901-1909) who continually waged war against the corruption of Tammany Hall and the city government. Here, Jerome stands priming his firearm to shoot the unsuspecting tiger. McClellan won a second term a few weeks after this cartoon was published, and soon broke completely with Tammany Hall. Despite the efforts of Jerome and McClellan, Murphy and Tammany Hall survived.
